about

Just some thoughts on sound: There are many qualities in sound and colour that give me joy, comfort, stimulation and refuge. Listening is a solitary pursuit, by that I mean that I have thought a lot about why I listen and as far as possible removed preconceptions, expectations, the requirement to have known musical forms adhered to, any ideas from others about what is good or bad, labels, genres or pigeon holing of type.

I believe this has helped me in both my listening and creation of sound. It is important to express this idea in the hope that others who have not already done so may practice a different kind of listening and go outside of the conventional forms of music they are used to.

Just to go back to sound and colour for a moment I have begun to notice that there are expressions of both that make me feel ill, with an emotional response tending towards depression. With color I think this is association, especially with childhood, toys, games, food color, medicines etc. Sound responses come more from over familiarity of both sounds and composition, but also some tones (timbres).

This album is full of tone I currently enjoy. The compositions are spontaneous improvisations. The accompanying sounds are a combination of semi randomly generated lines, generative software triggered by my input, loops captured while playing and delays. The only non guitar sound is a police radio live from internet scanner software on my phone and is played through the guitar pickup. When a track settles to a mood after a couple of minutes I listen, adding small artifacts at first and respond to and develop a movement through time. At this time I become detached from a conscious thought process and am immersed in the soundscape both driving and being driven to a resolution. I feel no urgency and am not concerned about duration.

I know it is a lot to ask to listen to my journeys but I would say with repeated listening they become more familiar and will take you on your own journeys.

All sound is from guitars: Baritone Danelectro, Fender SQ V Cabronita and a Pignose guitar through pedals and Mac software.
